The Central Texas Eating Disorders Specialists hosted an eating disorder symposium for dietitians, dietetic interns, and therapists involved with eating disorder patients. The symposium included discussions on treating boys with eating disorders, Diabulimia, ethical considerations in eating disorder treatment, and the role exercise plays in eating disorder treatment. The symposium gave me a better understanding of eating disorders and the various components involved in treating them. I was also given the opportunity to network with members of the professional eating disorder community and got introduced to treatment centers from across the nation. The most interesting discussion was on Diabulimia, a newer concept to the eating disorder world. The talk discussed the complexities in treating individuals with eating disorders and diabetes. Since diabetes requires attention to food especially carbs and other sugar sources, the way you deal with them has to be more unique.
